Koi Piece Size: 10.3 in by 10.3 in The Koi is created using one of my favorite mediums, oil pastels. Oil pastels are one of the most versatile art supplies you can use. Oil pastels can be blended directly on the paper or on a palette. A unique technique in using oil pastels is that you begin with the dark colours and then layer the lighter colors on top. Creating smooth layers is an important technique in achieving realism using oil pastels. Being able to create tonal layers without creating thick or thin areas and strokes are what creates smoothness of transition. It was an experience in asymmetrical balance, contrast and movement. The contrast of green blue filigree in the dark blue water create rhythm and movement in the picture. The asymmetric “Koi” with hair flowing fins and bodies create balance and harmony not only in the colouring but, also in it’s fluidity. |

Harmony Whale Piece size: 19 in by 14 in The “Harmony Whale” is a pencil crayon drawing on a piece of construction paper. The piece depicts a pregnant native whale. The piece felt empty and was missing something so I decided to add the baby. I also decided to do the lettering in this shape because I wanted it to resemble the movement of the whale. The challenge of this piece was getting the shape, lines and solid colour to create harmony and flow. I overcame this challenge by keeping focused on the curves of the outline, making sure that I maintained fluidity at all times. |

Indiana Jones Piece size: 24 in by 18 in Indiana Jones is one of my favorite pieces due to the interesting illusion the eyes create; making it seem as if they follow you everywhere you move. The portrait uses lines and shading of contrasting light and dark values to create organic forms. There were many different drawing and shading techniques that I learned while drawing this piece. Some were resting my hand on a sheet of paper, while drawing from the left side to the right side of the page to prevent smudging of the graphite. I also learned how to create different textures I also learned how to create the leather like texture in the folds of the hat and the texture of the ear and the hairs in his five o’clock shadow. Pencil shading was a difficult technique to learn but, also very satisfying when it was accomplished. Galloping Stallion Piece size: 11.25 in by 15.5 in The art piece is a small masonite, oil painting that depicts a horse galloping. The hardest part of this art piece was trying to get the different shades of color from blending and becoming muddy, especially in the many colours of the hair. I overcame these challenges by changing the normal process. I first painted the hair black letting it dry then, mixing the other colours of paint with mineral spirits to thin them, creating a feather like effect. The movement of the shapes in the background gave me an idea of the motion that I needed to use in painting the main subject, the horse. |

The David I chose “The David” as one of my art pieces because of the realistic features and also it represents the elements and principles of art. Using the principles of contrast, light versus dark, I created drama in the piece. Texture is represented in the entire piece by giving the illusion that it has a smooth rock like surface. The elements of form and value are brought to the piece in the dark shades of black. Using light and dark contrast this piece creates visual interest and emits emotion. The use of light in certain areas of the face creates the focal points in this portrait. Dark contrast was used to emphasize the eye, hair, cheekbone and chin. Also making the nose three dimensional. “The David” as any portrait was a challenge. Being able to get the dimensions of the facial features accurate was rewarding. |

Crystal Bridge Piece size: 24 in by 30 in This art piece first began as a small sketch and became a large futuristic oil painting. This painting depicts the London Millennium Bridge from a different perspective. My challenge in was getting the sharp edges and clean lines on the many triangles in the buildings, the sky, clouds and the main subject, the bridge. I overcame these by outlining, the main shapes of the art piece such as the clouds. I was influenced by the shine that the glass has when hit by sunlight, the different shapes and curves that the futurism style uses. |

Psychedelic Nude Piece size: 12 in by 16 in This art piece is a small masonite, oil painting. It depicts a nude woman's backside. I decided to do the background in colour. And, the nude in black and white in order to make the woman stand out while having a unique background. My challenge was using a different texture in the body that made it seem realistic. I overcame this challenge by taking small amounts of paint and dabbing the brush on the masonite to create a skin-like texture. I was influenced by the form and shape of the body. Cubistic Illusion Piece size: 40 in by 40 in This art piece is a large illusion acrylic painting. I decided to do each side different and add a cube illusion in the center because it makes every angle of the art piece different and unique from every perspective. The challenges that I faced in painting this art piece was getting the lines straight and getting the colors. How I overcame these challenges were by using tape to divided the side I was working on from the others to prevent the blending of other colors sides which also allowed me to create clean lines. I was influenced by the shape of a 3 dimensional cube. |
